Military communiqué on fake confrontation
Military command issued false communiqué about confrontation to cover up detentions and disappearances.
EP Colonel Victor Ernesto Marquez Torres, Political Military Chief of Apurimac, issued a communiqué stating that on January 14, 1988 there had been a confrontation between Army personnel and subversives, resulting in the death of Armando Huamantingo Villanueva, Juan Pablo Carbajal, Manuel Niño de Guzman Ayvar, Leandro Pareja Tapia, Simona Perez Tapia and Maria Elena Zavala Bazan. However, these people were arbitrarily detained in circumstances other than a confrontation. The communiqué did not indicate where the bodies had been buried.
