On January 18, 1988, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso murdered four Banco Agrario workers on the road between Huahuapuquio and Cangallo. The victims were identified as René Cárdenas, José Medina, Luis Cabrera and Eliseo Flores. This attack was part of the Shining Path strategy of attacking State representatives and public officials in the area. The event occurred in a context of intensification of the internal armed conflict during the 1988-1991 period in the region.
