Torture of Juan Pablo Carbajal and María Elena Zavala
Military tortured husband and wife in Checcasa looking for information on Shining Path weapons.
During the early hours of the morning, soldiers and four detainees went to the cabin of husband and wife Juan Pablo Carbajal Hurtado (43 years old) and María Elena Zavala Cayllahua (28 years old) looking for weapons to prove their Shining Path militancy. Both husband and wife were cruelly tortured. Under torture, one of them allegedly accused Manuel Niño de Guzmán de Sallalli as the person hiding the weapons, which prompted the patrol to go to that community.
