In 1988, the PCP-SL raided the San Genaro mining center in Castrovirreyna province. During this attack, the Shining Pathists viciously murdered the head of industrial relations and a contractor named Ponce. According to the testimonies of former workers, Ponce was killed because he did not "deal well" with the workers. This attack was part of a series of violent actions by the PCP-SL against mining centers in Huancavelica. After these murders, the military arrested eight leaders of San Genaro, accusing them of being terrorists, who were unjustly imprisoned for eight months until the solidarity of miners at the national and international level achieved their release.
