Destruction of police posts in Chongos Alto and Yanacancha by PCP-SL

In mid 1988, the PCP-SL destroyed the police posts located in Chongos Alto and Yanacancha that guarded the Canipaco valley area. This occurred in a context of intensifying Shining Path violence in the region and shortly before a state of emergency was decreed in Junín.

In mid-1988, the PCP-SL destroyed the police posts that the police had established in Chongos Alto and Yanacancha to guard the Canipaco valley area. These police posts represented the presence of the State in the region, where land conflicts were developing between communities and SAIS Cahuide. The army had been conducting raids since 1984 from its military base in the district of Vilca (Huancavelica). In the last months of 1988, a state of emergency was decreed throughout the department of Junín, although initially this did not affect the control that Sendero exercised over the inhabitants of the valley through an atmosphere of terror.
