In 1988, by law, the province of Chancay officially changed its name to Huaura. This province is the second most populated in the department of Lima, with an economy based on agricultural and fishing activities.

The province has 12 districts and after Lima, it is the most populated province in the department, with a sustained population growth that went from 112,694 inhabitants in 1972 to 164,704 inhabitants in 1993. The two main primary activities on which the province's economic activity is based are agriculture and fishing. The urban conglomerate of Huacho-Huaura, which accounts for almost half of the province's population and is home to important manufacturing centers, is also important.
