On December 3, 1987, members of the PCP-SL assassinated priest Victor Acuña Cardenas while he was celebrating mass in the Magdalena church in Huamanga. The priest was accused by Shining Path of negotiating food donations for Caritas. This murder occurred in a context of relative calm in the region between 1986 and 1988, when the PCP-SL had significantly reduced the number of its actions in the department. The crime was part of the selective assassination strategy that the PCP-SL executed against religious figures and authorities they considered obstacles to their revolutionary project.
