On November 6, 1987, the MRTA carried out its first incursion in the city of Juanjui with an operation executed by sixty members of the organization. The action consisted of the seizure of the three police posts in the city, the airport and the looting of a bank. The operation cost the life of a policeman and allowed the MRTA to take possession of an important arsenal of weapons. As in previous cases, a ritual surrender of captured policemen took place in the plaza, with the raising of the flag and an assembly, amidst the enthusiasm of a population that did not identify with police officers considered abusive and possibly corrupt. The following day, the same group took the town of San José de Sisa without firing a shot, generating great national media impact.
