On October 18, 1987, the MRTA took over the town of Soritor as part of the 'Tupac Amaru Vive' Military Campaign. This action was part of a series of raids and takeovers of towns that the Tupac Amaru Army (ET) carried out in the department of San Martin during the months of October, November and December 1987. The taking of Soritor took place ten days after the beginning of the military campaign, which had started on October 8 with the incursion in Tabalosos and Macedas. This action was part of the MRTA's strategy to recover weapons, maintain control of cities in the department and consolidate its presence in the region.
