Nelson Pozo Calva, undersecretary of organization of the Peruvian Aprista Party (PAP), was assassinated on October 1, 1987. This assassination took place in the context of a series of selective attacks against APRA political leaders in Metropolitan Lima. The crime was part of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso's strategy of eliminating political leaders and civil authorities during the transition period towards the "encirclement of the city". This type of selective assassination characterized the second half of the 1980s in the Peruvian capital.
