In October 1987, a group of fifteen hikers entered Luchubamba, in the district of Sitacocha. Before taking the town, on the road leading to Cushuro and Huacra, they assassinated Bartolo Meza, secretary of the APRA party. Once in the town, the Shining Pathists set fire to and looted the municipality. This incursion was preceded by an attack in March 1987, when the PCP-SL dynamited the Civil Guard post in Luchubamba, resulting in the death of a policeman and one of the attackers.
