PCP-SL makes inroads in Cochas and Comas

On September 12, 1987, the PCP-SL simultaneously raided Cochas and Comas, threatening authorities and demanding resignations. This event marks the beginning of the Shining Path violence in the Tulumayo basin.

On September 12, 1987, a Shining Path column of the PCP-SL successively raided the district capitals of Cochas and Comas, in the Tulumayo basin. During these incursions, the Shining Pathists threatened the local authorities and demanded their resignation, distributing a communiqué stating that the Communist Party of Peru had been leading the revolution in the country since 1980 and that its triumph was inevitable. They warned that the Army would come to repress the population, that they would have to flee to the hills, and that the population should plant only for their own consumption and not to sell in the market. This date marks the beginning of the PCP-SL's violent activities in the Tulumayo basin, an area located on the eastern slope of the mountain range that links the highlands with the Junin jungle.
