Attack on command headquarters and barracks in Cuzco

On August 29, 1987, a detachment of the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the Civil Guard headquarters and an army barracks in the very center of the city of Cuzco. This attack demonstrated the confidence in their forces that the PCP-SL had at the time. The attack was part of a series of offensives against police posts that intensified between February and June 1987 in various provinces of the department. This type of action against military and police installations in urban areas represented an escalation in the PCP-SL's strategy in the southern Andean region.
