On August 8, 1987, PCP-SL militants carried out a wave of dynamite attacks against multiple targets in the city of Huancayo. The targets attacked included the premises of the Hipotecario and Interbanc banks, the Central de Crédito Cooperativo, the Social Security, Carsa, the premises of the Civil Court and the Casa Zambrano. This coordinated series of attacks was part of the escalation of violence that the PCP-SL developed in the Mantaro valley during 1987, a year in which sabotage, selective assassinations and attacks against public and private infrastructure intensified. The attacks were part of the Shining Path strategy of attacking state and economic institutions in the main cities of the region.
