In July 1987, five community members were murdered in Putis, a locality in the district of San José de Santillana in the province of Huanta. This event occurred in the context of the intensification of the internal armed conflict in the region, during a period of relative calm between 1985 and 1987 in Ayacucho. The district of Santillana had been the scene of multiple acts of violence since 1982, including assassinations perpetrated by both the PCP-Sendero Luminoso and counter-subversive forces.
