On June 8, 1987, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso attacked the Paucartambo police post in the province of the same name in the department of Cuzco. This attack was part of a series of PCP-SL raids against various police posts in the upper provinces of Cuzco during June 1987. The attack took place in a context of expanding violence in the department, where the authorities of the Peruvian Aprista Party had become the focus of Shining Path attacks following their electoral victory.
