On June 2, 1987, members of the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL) attacked and took over the town of Aguaytia, located in the province of Padre Abad, department of Ucayali. This attack was part of the IV Military Plan of the PCP-SL called "Develop support bases", which was in force between March 1987 and September 1988. The event occurred in a context of intensification of subversive actions in various regions of the country, including attacks on local authorities and armed actions by both the PCP-SL and the MRTA.
