On May 23, 1987, the Peruvian government extended for sixty days the state of emergency in the provinces of Lima and Callao. This measure was taken in the context of a series of terrorist attacks that had been affecting the capital and the port of Callao. The state of emergency had initially been declared in February of that year, also for sixty days, and had been extended in March. This new extension reflected the continuity of the situation of political violence faced by the country during the government of Alan García Pérez.
