National strike called by CGTP

National strike called by the CGTP on May 19, 1987, which marked the end of the social truce with the APRA government. The measure was successful due to the coincidence with a simultaneous police strike.

On May 19, 1987, the first national strike of this period took place, called by the CGTP (General Confederation of Peruvian Workers), marking the end of the social truce that had characterized the first years of the APRA government. The outstanding feature of this strike was that it coincided with a police strike, which had a significant influence on the success of the measure. The strike was called after the CGTP leadership had previously postponed the measure so as not to weaken the talks being held with the businessmen and the government. The strike took place in a context of economic reactivation with unusual growth rates in the industrial sector and recovery of real wages, but workers felt excluded from the political and economic model due to the wage ceilings imposed by the government.
