Assassination of Mayor Zenobio Huarzaya
The PCP-Sendero Luminoso assassinated the mayor of San Juan de Salinas, Zenobio Huarzaya, a militant of Izquierda Unida, as part of its campaign against local authorities in Puno.
On April 8, 1987, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso assassinated the mayor of San Juan de Salinas, Zenobio Huarzaya, who was a militant of Izquierda Unida (IU). This assassination took place in the context of a systematic campaign by the PCP-SL against local political authorities in the department of Puno. San Juan de Salinas had been a significant place for the peasant organization, since the Departmental Federation of Peasants of Puno was founded there in December 1978. The assassination was part of the Shining Path strategy of attacking State representatives and democratically elected authorities in the highland provinces of Puno.
