Murder of Zenón Huarsaya
The Shining Path PCP assassinated Zenón Huarsaya, the recently elected mayor and peasant leader of San Juan de Salinas, dragging him to the town square where he had gathered the population.
Zenón Huarsaya, local leader, founder of the Peasant Federation and newly elected mayor of San Juan de Salinas, was assassinated by the Shining Path PCP. He was dragged from his home to the town square where the PCP-SL had gathered the population. This assassination occurred in the context of conflicts between the Shining Path PCP and the population in the area of Azángaro, Puno. The event marked the beginning of a series of attacks against local authorities in the region.
