In April 1987, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso suffered a hard blow with the fall of its main column in the province of Azángaro, department of Puno. This event represented a significant setback for the subversive organization in the Puno highlands region. The fall of this column occurred in a context where peasant mobilization was tending to decline and the counter-subversive groups were beginning to control the situation, albeit through strong repressive actions and measures, especially against the peasantry. This event marked a turning point in the presence and operational capacity of the PCP-SL in the high provinces of Puno.
