Appearance of MRTA in Puno
The MRTA appeared in Puno in April 1987 with its first attack against the Banco de Credito. The organization had a greater presence in this region because of its links with the Bolivian left.
The Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) made its appearance in the department of Puno in April 1987, with propaganda and sabotage actions in the cities of Puno and Juliaca. The first recorded attack was on April 13, 1987 against the premises of the Puno Credit Bank, marking the beginning of MRTA-MIR operations in the region. The MRTA had a greater presence in Puno than in other areas of the southern Andean region due to the contacts established with political parties of the Bolivian left. Unlike the PCP-Sendero Luminoso, the MRTA concentrated its initial actions in urban areas through attacks and propaganda.
