On March 6, 1987, a police major was assassinated on a central street in the city of Huancayo. This assassination was part of a series of "selective annihilations" that increased since January 1987, when the PCP-SL intensified its violent actions in the Mantaro Valley. Selective assassinations against members of law enforcement and public officials became a recurrent tactic of the subversive group during this period. This event occurred in the context of an escalation of violence that characterized the years 1987-1992 in the region, a period in which 80% of the deaths and disappearances of the entire cycle of violence in the Mantaro Valley were concentrated.
