Police intervention at universities on February 13, 1987

4,000 police intervene San Marcos, Ingeniería and La Cantuta on 13 February 1987, arresting 793 students

On February 13, 1987, during the state of emergency and in the middle of the curfew imposed in Lima, around four thousand policemen entered the university residences of three state universities in Lima: San Marcos, Engineering and La Cantuta, in the early hours of the morning. The Minister of the Interior stated that this was done to check for the existence of subversive groups' preparation centers. It was reported that 793 students were detained, most of them for being undocumented, and others for having a subversive background. There was extensive damage and several injuries. The rectors protested the measure, which violated the principle of university autonomy.
