On February 5, 1987, a detachment of the PCP-SL attacked the police posts of Checca and Quehua in the department of Cuzco. During the confrontation with the police, the PCP-SL lost two of its members: Sonia Lino Ojeda and Janeth Vizcarra. This attack was part of a series of PCP-SL offensives against police posts that took place between February and June 1987 in the high provinces of Cuzco. The attacks on police posts and the assassination of local authorities had as an important component the fight against cattle rustling, a strategy used by the PCP-SL to gain the support of the cattle-raising villages in the highlands.
