On January 14, 1987, a contingent of the PCP-SL assassinated an army commander in the city of Huancayo. This assassination marked the beginning of the increase in 'selective annihilations' in the area. The event occurred in the context of the intensification of violence in the Mantaro valley, when the Shining Path detachments were rehearsing the organization of Popular Committees and increasing their violent actions. Shortly after this assassination, other attacks against members of law enforcement continued, including the murder of a police sergeant and his wife on February 5, and of a police major on March 6 of the same year.
