Appearance of Shining Path in Morococha

In 1987, the Shining Path appeared in the mining town of Morococha, where the 'Pukallacta' group was predominant. It is presumed that Shining Path militants from La Oroya influenced local leftist factions.

In 1987, the PCP-Sendero Luminoso made its appearance in the mining settlement of Morococha. The Morococha unions were dominated by the 'Pukallacta' group, a radical faction of Patria Roja, with which the Shining Path would appear that year. It is considered possible that some Shining Path militants who had been working in La Oroya had come to Morococha and influenced the Pukallacta and other leftist factions to join the 'rebels in arms'. This appearance is part of the PCP-SL's strategy to infiltrate the mining centers in the central region of the country.
