Janio García Herbozo was executed by the PCP-Sendero Luminoso in the main square of the town of Gorgor, Cajatambo province. Prior to his execution, he was subjected to a "popular trial" where he was accused of extorting money from the inhabitants of Cochas. This murder was part of a series of executions that the PCP-SL carried out between 1987 and 1988 against people considered to have "antisocial behavior" (abigeos, extortionists, etc.) in the Nunumia, Cochas, Paca and Colpa basins. These killings of "undesirables" generated widespread sympathy in the communities, who understood that these actions were true justice in contrast to the ineffectiveness of the legal justice system and the police.
