In 1987, a group of approximately 40 PCP-SL militants entered a village and went to Hipólito Canchari's house to order him to prepare food for all of them. This type of incursion was part of the Shining Path strategy of territorial control and forced supply in rural areas. During that year, with the decline of subversive actions in the highlands, the villagers returned to elect their authorities, despite some incursions by PCP-SL contingents. On October 16, 1987, in Chinche Tingo, three recently elected local authorities were assassinated by the PCP-SL.
