This incursion followed the beginning of the PCP-SL's violent activities in the Tulumayo basin that same year. The entry of the MRTA was characterized as sporadic, unlike the more systematic presence of the Shining Path. MRTA's presence in the area manifested itself mainly through incursions into communities, although its activity was less constant than that of the PCP-SL.
