Beginning of violent activities of the PCP-SL in Tulumayo

The PCP-SL began its violent activities in the Tulumayo basin in 1987, with raids in Cochas and Comas on September 12. At the end of that year, the MRTA also sporadically entered the area.

In 1987, the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL) began its violent activities in the Tulumayo basin. On September 12, 1987, a Shining Path column made successive incursions into the districts of Cochas and Comas. At the end of that same year, the MRTA also entered, albeit sporadically, some communities and towns in the Tulumayo. This beginning of violent activities marked the beginning of a period of terror in the region, where the subversives subsequently imposed orders to plant only for self-consumption and prohibited trade.
