PCP-SL makes inroads in Chongos Alto

In 1987, PCP-SL columns repeatedly raided Chongos Alto, marking the arrival of the 'new power' of the Shining Path in the district. The incursions included political work with the population and harassment of the police forces until they withdrew from the area.

In the second half of 1987, the PCP-SL made its first incursion into Chongos Alto, a district located in the Canipaco area. Shining Path columns repeatedly visited the district, marking the arrival of the 'new power' in the area. During these incursions, the PCP-SL militants addressed the villagers, especially the younger ones, telling them that 'the poor should not be marginalized but should reach the power to change the course'. The incursions continued with harassment against the police forces until the police withdrew from the area. In January 1988, the PCP-SL organized a meeting of residents with the objective of establishing a Popular Committee, designating some community members as its leaders.
