In 1987, the MRTA began military operations on a larger scale, with the central jungle being the main scenario of the Tupacamarista Popular Army's actions. The Alto and Bajo Yurinaki, Pichanaki; Villarica, Palcazú and Puerto Bermúdez, in the province of Oxapampa and, to a lesser extent, for a very short time, in the districts of Río Negro and Pampa Hermosa, in Satipo, concentrated the greatest number of military actions. Beginning in 1988, the columns of the MRTA Central Front moved easily to 'take' towns and communities. The MRTA began to dispute and displace the PCP-SL from some areas and zones where the Shining Path had a presence, registering several armed confrontations in the Universidad Nacional del Centro and in the districts of Andamarca, Pariahuanca and Santo Domingo de Acobamba.
