1987 Municipal Elections

In 1987, municipal elections were held in Huamanga, Huanta and La Mar, where IU won in Huamanga and APRA in Huanta and La Mar. This electoral process took place in a period of relative calm of the internal armed conflict in the region.

In the 1987 municipal elections, the United Left (IU) won in the province of Huamanga, while the APRA won in the provinces of Huanta and La Mar. These elections took place in a context of relative calm in Ayacucho, between 1986 and 1988, due to several factors: the decision of the PCP-SL to expand the war to the entire highlands of the country, the onslaught of the Armed Forces and the rondas that had affected their support bases, and the withdrawal of the Marines in July 1985. The electoral process contrasts with the municipal elections of 1983, when no elections were held in any of the districts of Huanta or in the ten districts of Huamanga due to the fear generated by subversive actions and counter-subversive operations.
