Elections to the Constituent Assembly of 1978 in Peru
In 1978, various leftist groups in Peru decided to participate in the elections for the Constituent Assembly, leading to new alliances and splits within the left. The Unidad Democrático Popular (UDP) was formed by several organizations, including VR, MIR, and PCR, to contest the elections. Another coalition, the Frente Obrero Campesino Estudiantil y Popular (FOCEP), was also established, while some groups like the PCP-Patria Roja chose not to participate, criticizing the assembly's legitimacy.
La decisión de participar en las elecciones a la Asamblea Constituyente de 1978 provocó nuevas rupturas y agrupamientos en la izquierda peruana. En enero de 1978 se fundó la Unidad Democrático Popular (UDP), presidida por Alfonso Barrantes, integrando a VR, MIR, PCR y otros grupos, con influencia en organizaciones campesinas, obreras y de barriadas. Simultáneamente se creó el Frente Obrero Campesino Estudiantil y Popular (FOCEP), integrado por PST, POMR, FIR-POC y otras organizaciones con influencia en sindicatos mineros y gremios campesinos. Otras fuerzas como PCP Unidad y PSR participaron sin alianzas, mientras que PCP-Patria Roja rechazó participar denunciando el carácter engañoso de la Asamblea.
