Municipal elections in which IU loses the mayoralty of Lima to PAP
On November 9, 1986, municipal elections were held in which the IU participated with Alfonso Barrantes as candidate for reelection as Mayor of Lima. Jorge del Castillo, candidate of the PAP, carried out an intense electoral campaign which, with the evident support of the President, allowed him to win by a narrow margin of votes. In spite of having increased his electoral flow in relation to that obtained in 1983, IU lost in numerous provinces of the departments of Cuzco, Puno and Arequipa.
