On July 11, 1986, the Shining Path PCP launched its first attack on a police post in Chucapuente, Aymaraes province. This attack took place in the context of an escalation of violence in the area, where days before, on July 7, the PCP-SL had had its first confrontation with the Army in Soccos. The first continuous violent actions of the PCP-SL in Apurímac had begun between February and April 1986 with a series of assassinations in various communities in the province of Aymaraes. This attack on the police post marked an intensification of the subversive strategy in the region, which sought control of roads and bridges.
