On July 7, 1986, the PCP-SL had its first confrontation with the Army in Soccos, province of Aymaraes, department of Apurimac. This confrontation took place in the context of a series of violent actions by the PCP-SL that had begun between February and April 1986 with assassinations in various communities in the province of Aymaraes, and which extended to the province of Antabamba in the following months until July. Four days after this confrontation, on July 11, the PCP-SL launched its first attack on a police post in Chucapuente, also in the province of Aymaraes. These events marked the beginning of a struggle for control of roads and bridges in the area, with several subsequent attacks on towns and peasant communities.
