XVII International Socialist Congress

International Congress of the Socialist International held in Lima on June 20, 1986, in a context marked by the recent riot in the capital's prisons two days earlier.

The XVII International Socialist Congress was held in Lima on June 20, 1986. This international event took place a few days after the start of the XVIII Conference of the Socialist International Women, which had begun on June 16 in the same city. The congress took place in a very tense national political context, marked by the riot of terrorism detainees in three prisons in Lima and Callao (Lurigancho, El Frontón and Santa Bárbara) that had occurred on June 18, just two days before the beginning of the congress. The holding of this important international event of world social democracy in Lima reflected the international projection of the APRA government of Alan Garcia Perez.
