Violent suppression of riots in three Lima prisons

Killing of 238 inmates in Lima prisons after Shining Path riot, with extrajudicial executions in Lurigancho and El Frontón

On June 18, 1986, there was a Shining Path riot in the Lurigancho, El Frontón and Santa Bárbara prisons with hostage taking. The Council of Ministers decided to reestablish order with maximum energy, entrusting the task to the Joint Command of the Armed Forces. The repression resulted in the death of 238 inmates: 3 in Santa Barbara, 124 in Lurigancho (extrajudicially executed after surrendering) and 111 in El Fronton. The TRC considers this a reactive and deeply mistaken decision by the Government that created the conditions for the high number of deaths and indications of extrajudicial executions.
