Statement by Javier Diez Canseco on the anti-terrorist front

Senator Javier Diez Canseco (PUM) declared on June 14, 1986 that the position of the anti-terrorist front was that of Alfonso Barrantes but not of Izquierda Unida, evidencing internal differences within the left on how to confront terrorism.

Senator Javier Diez Canseco of the Partido Unificado Mariateguista (PUM) publicly stated that the position of the anti-terrorist front belonged to Alfonso Barrantes but not to Izquierda Unida (IU). This statement came in the context of a debate on the formation of a common front against terrorism. Shortly before, the mayor of Lima, Alfonso Barrantes, had insisted on the need to form a common front against terrorism, an initiative that was supported by the Catholic Church. Diez Canseco's statement highlighted the internal differences within the Peruvian left on how to confront political violence.
