On February 18, 1986, the PCP-SL carried out an attack and assault on the Pomasi mine in Ayaviri, Melgar province. This attack was part of a Shining Path offensive that took place between February 17 and 22, 1986 in the region. The offensive included multiple actions in different localities, beginning with the attack on the Banco del Sur in Juliaca on the 17th, followed by the capture and assault of the Pomasi mine on the 18th, the capture of 3 presumed Shining Pathists in Muñani on the 19th, and the attack on the town of San Antón on the 21st and 22nd, all in the province of Azángaro.
