On February 17, 1986, the PCP-SL attacked the Banco del Sur in Juliaca as part of a new offensive that extended between February 17 and 21. This action was part of a series of coordinated attacks that included the seizure and assault of the Pomasi mine in Ayaviri on the 18th, the capture of 3 presumed Shining Pathists in Muñani on the 19th, and attacks on the town of San Antón on the 21st and 22nd, all in the province of Azángaro. This offensive occurred in a context of intensified violence in Puno during 1986, a year that registered the highest number of attacks and terrorist acts in the whole cycle of violence in the department.
