Massacres in Toraya, Lucre and Colcabamba

First massacres of peasants in Toraya, Lucre and Colcabamba, Aymaraes province, Apurimac, occurred between February and April 1986, which marked the expansion of the internal armed conflict towards the highland provinces of the department.

Between February and April 1986, the first massacres of peasants took place in the towns of Toraya, Lucre and Colcabamba, located in the province of Aymaraes, department of Apurimac. These massacres marked the beginning of the internal armed conflict in the highland provinces of Apurimac. The process of internal armed conflict, which had been most intense in the provinces of Andahuaylas and Chincheros, expanded into the highland provinces with these attacks. The counter-subversive forces began to organize the first Self-Defense Committees to enter the most remote communities and hamlets of the province, intensifying the internal conflict.
