In 1986, peasant patrols were organized in the province of San Marcos, initially forming approximately 80 committees to combat cattle rustling, with the support of the United Left. Later, in 1987, autonomous patrols were organized in the same province, reaching a total of 112 committees. These autonomous peasant patrols, dominant in the northern provinces of the department of Cajamarca, were permanently harassed by the PCP-SL, which threatened and assassinated their leaders in an attempt to deactivate them. The peasant patrols were originally born in Chota in 1977 and began to spread their organization to the provinces of San Marcos and Cajabamba in 1985.
