Clash in Curgos with hikers dead
Clash in Curgos, Huamachuco, where three hikers died when 12 PCP-SL militants were caught resting in a house. Carmen Sandoval Loayza was captured and later died in prison in Lima.
In 1986, in Curgos, district of Huamachuco, 12 hikers were surprised while resting in the house of Carmen Sandoval Loayza. During the attack, three hikers were killed in the confrontation. Carmen Sandoval's daughter was killed in the archway at the entrance to the town and another hiker was killed nearby. All the dead were buried in Huamachuco in a mass grave. In the same operation "Julia" and Carmen Sandoval were captured and imprisoned in Lima where she later died.
