In 1986, the Communist Party of Peru - Shining Path (PCP-SL) carried out forced recruitments of adolescents and youths in several districts of the province of Churcampa, specifically in San Miguel de Mayocc and Locroja. These compulsive recruitments were part of the PCP-SL's strategy to rebuild its ranks after the decline of its subversive actions in 1985. Forced recruitment of youths had become frequent since 1984 in the region. This practice forced many rural families, especially those with more resources, to migrate to district or provincial capitals to protect their children.
