Murder of mayoral candidate in Pumahuasi

A mayoral candidate was assassinated in Pumahuasi during the municipal election campaign at the end of 1986. The event took place in a context of violence in which 11 villagers were killed, including cases of extreme brutality.

During the municipal election campaign at the end of 1986, a candidate for mayor was assassinated in the town of Pumahuasi. In addition to this political assassination, 11 villagers were murdered in circumstances that testimonies do not clarify who the perpetrators were. One of the victims, Oswaldo Ruíz de la Vega, was gruesomely murdered with a machete, and his pregnant wife suffered a similar death after being raped. Pumahuasi is located near Tingo Maria, in an area where the PCP-SL was developing Parallel People's Power Committees (CPPP) in 1986.
