Land reclamation in Santa Rosa and Macarí
About 4,000 peasants from Santa Rosa and Macarí, led by the Unitary Federation of Peasants of Melgar, peacefully recovered 10,000 hectares of the ERPS "Kunurana" on December 13, 1985, triggering one of the most important peasant mobilizations in the history of Puno.
On December 13, 1985, about 4,000 peasants from the districts of Santa Rosa and Macarí, led by the Melgar Peasant Unitary Federation, peacefully initiated the recovery of 10,000 hectares of the Rural Enterprise of Social Property "Kunurana". This action triggered one of the most important peasant mobilizations in the history of Puno, leading to a new agrarian reform. A little more than a month later, on February 7, 1986, President Alan Garcia announced the "restructuring and resizing of the associative enterprises". This event marked the beginning of the land seizures in December 1985 that transformed the agrarian structure in Puno.
